Savoring the Past

A Rich History of Food & Culture

Tijuana is Mexico’s melting pot, home to one of the country’s most diverse food scenes.

Ralfy Quepons grew up in the heart of Tijuana, spending time at his dad’s mechanic shop—right next to their humble taco stand, El Pilón. In Mexico, taquerias are more than just eateries; they’re community hubs where friends gather, families bond, and young love blossoms.

From that small taco stand to Rafelitos—a high-ceilinged tribute to Mexican pride—Ralfy continues to build community, bringing the warmth of Tijuana’s taquerias to the Alaskan food scene.

Culinary History

Today, Rafelitos continues to honor this great Mexican tradition with their combination of authentic foods from many different regions of Mexico. Team Rafelitos has traveled to Tijuana, Michoacán, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Toluca, and Oaxaca to learn their recipes from renowned Mexican chefs and artists.

Xolo
The Rafelitos Mascot

Xoloitzcuintle, or Xolo (pronounced cho•lo) as many people know them as, have a deeply woven history in Mexico. They were  buried with their owners to help as guides to the soul on its journey to the underworld.

They are very special to the cultures heart and that is why today, they are a symbol of Tijuana's pro soccer club ' Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente'.

Pride

There is something special about Mexican pride. In Mexican culture, it is standard to do your best no matter what obstacles you face. There are no excuses. It is ernest. There is no arrogance in it. It honors family and tradition and that's it. It's simple and beautiful. At Rafelitos, you can taste the pride in every bite.
